Councillor Development In-House Courses

We offer a range of in-house Councillor Development courses.  Following discussions with you regarding your requirements, we provide you with a training proposal which includes suggestions for content, duration and delivery methods.  These sessions can be delivered as repeated sessions or one-off sessions and we can accommodate timings such as evening courses as well as those delivered during working hours.  Popular courses in this category are:

ILM Endorsed Community Leadership Award

This programme is endorsed by ILM to provide recognition of the development of skills, knowledge and experience of Councillors as they become established and more experienced in their role and functions.  Councillors attend their Council’s induction programme and then assessments are carried by an assessor so that the Councillor can evidence how they:

  • Describe and review examples of effective community leadership
  • Identify the skills and strategies needed to operate effectively in a specified community leadership role
  • Explain how to build and maintain the trust and confidence of a community group
  • Engage effectively with at least one community group
  • Describe the needs, views and priorities of the community
  • Listen effectively and ask questions to elicit appropriate information
  • Represent views and situations accurately and persuasively
  • Review the outcomes of engagement with a community group particularly with vulnerable and marginalised groups
  • Gain and respond to feedback on own contribution and style of leadership
  • Ensure s/he is accessible to members of the relevant community/ies
  • Clarify issues and concerns raised by individuals and communities, reflecting them back and gaining agreement where necessary
  • Provide information and advice to help others to resolve issues and concerns
  • Follow up actions to ensure that concerns have been met
  • Prioritise tasks and engagements effectively
  • Make and organise relevant, concise and accessible records

The programme is designed to prepare participants to successfully pass the 2 ILM-endorsed assignments:

  • A Reflective Review
  • A Professional Discussion Interview

£199 plus VAT per person for member organisations
£238 plus VAT per person for non-member organisations
